A Hethersett Academy student came home with a brace of bronze medals from a martial arts world championship.

Joshua Wright, a Year 9 student at Hethersett Academy, was selected by his local karate club, Eastern Shotokan Karate Association (ESKA), to represent the Traditional Shotokan Karate UK (TSKUK) National Karate Squad at the 8th WUKF World Karate Championships, held in Bratislava, Slovakia.

The event took place on the 19th – 23rd June with 19 athletes chosen from the UK to compete for the TSKUK National Squad.

Joshua took part in team events, including Team Kumite (fighting) and Rotational Team Kumite with his team taking the bronze medal in both events. This fantastic achievement meant that their team achieved third best for their age category in the world!

As well as receiving a medal for his efforts, Joshua had an amazing experience at the championships which will enhance his future karate training and leave rewarding memories.

The event included over 2,300 athletes competing from over 40 countries and 83 national associations entered.

TSKUK Head Coach Jason Hitchings said: "Joshua was a fantastic team player and encouraged his fellow teammates throughout, staying to support the 18 years and over competitors in their events on his final day."

Well done Joshua and the team!
