Travelling to school – changes due to Covid-19

Published on 03/06/20

To make sure children are as safe as possible, your child will need to make some changes to the way they travel to school and return home. They must social distance during their journey.

Where possible children should walk, bike or be driven to school by their parents. We would encourage families not to use buses. If you need to use buses, there is government guidance available.

We’ve shared information below for different methods of transport:

Once children have arrived at school, they will enter the building using the front entrance. There will be markings on the floor 2m apart, to help children social distance. Our team will be there to guide them. Children will use hand sanitiser while entering the school and go straight to their classrooms.

Walking and cycling

Children should walk or cycle alone, or with a member of their household. They won’t be able to travel with other children.

Students need to arrive at the time provided on their timetable and leave school immediately, once they’re dismissed. This is because we’re staggering students’ arrival and departure to make sure they can social distance.

Students won’t be able to gather together outside school.

There is government guidance available about how to walk/cycle to school safely.

Travelling by car

Children should only travel with their only household – families won’t be able to carpool during this time.

  • Parents will need to use the central and rear parking bays only

  • Parents should remain in their cars and leave the site as soon as possible, to reduce congestion

Buses

Where possible, children should walk, bike or be driven to school by their parents. We would encourage families not to use buses.

If you need to use buses, there is government guidance available. Please encourage your child to maintain social distancing while on the bus and provide them with hand sanitiser, if possible.

There is more information about buses below:

  • The Little Melton bus service will only  be available by request and for a maximum of 4 children at any one time to facilitate social distancing. Your child’s Assistant College Lead will be in contact with you to discuss transport options with you if your child normally uses the Little Melton bus.

  • All other Passenger Transport Buses will run at normal

  • Students will disembark buses one at a time

  • Buses will be staggered in 5-minute drop offs to avoid gatherings of students

  • Students will have access to hand sanitiser when they arrive in school

We understand children arriving on buses won’t be able to arrive at the specific staggered time on their timetable. They should be at the bus stop at their normal pick up time.
