This policy sets out the school’s arrangements for managing the access of providers to pupils at the school for the purpose of giving them information about the provider’s education or training offer. This complies with the school’s legal obligations under Section 42B of the Education Act 1997.
Careers education and guidance programmes make a major contribution to preparing young people for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life. A planned progressive programme of activities supports them in choosing pathways that suit their interests and abilities and help them to follow a career path and sustain employability throughout their working lives.
Hethersett Academy is committed to providing our pupils with a programme of careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) for all pupils in Years 7-11.
Hethersett Academy’s careers education, information and guidance policy has the following aims:
- To provide impartial and independent advice for all pupils
- To prevent pupils leaving and becoming NEET
- To contribute to strategies for raising achievement, especially by increasing motivation
- To support inclusion, challenge stereotyping and promote equality of opportunity
- To encourage participation in continued learning including higher education, further education and apprenticeships
- To develop enterprise and employment skills
- To reduce drop out from and course switching in education and training
- To contribute to the economic prosperity of individuals and communities
- To meet the needs of all our pupils through appropriate differentiation
- To focus pupils on their future aspirations
- To involve parents and carers
- To support the raising of the participation age and assist with positive destinations for all pupils post 16, 17 and 18
All pupils in years 8-13 are entitled:
- to find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeships opportunities, as part of a careers programme which provides information on the full range of education and training options available at each transition point;
- to hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer, including technical education and apprenticeships – through options events, assemblies and group discussions and taster events;
- to understand how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses.
Young people do not make career decisions in isolation and parents/carers can have a substantial impact, as well as a clear interest in the right outcomes for their child. The school is keen to foster parental involvement in the careers programme, wherever possible.
Events for parents and carers
Parents/carers are invited into school to discuss their son/daughter’s progress at parents' evenings. Representatives from the careers team, as well as education and training providers, attend events for specific year groups. In addition, specialist events for parents include Key Stage 4/GCSE Options Evening (Year 8) & Pathways 16 + Evening (Year 11).
Parents/carers are kept up to date with career-related events and activities affecting their son/daughter via letters home, the school website and social media. Parents/carers are welcome to attend careers meetings, by prior notice. They are also welcome to make contact with the careers lead within school, should they have any questions or concerns.
Links with employers
We are always looking for facilitators from industry who can attend our events, provide careers talks and work with students on activities based around their industry and different careers paths. Links with other policies
This policy supports and is underpinned by key school policies including those for teaching and learning, assessment, recording and reporting achievement, citizenship, PSHE, equal opportunities and diversity, health and safety, and special needs.
Implementation of careers education
Careers education is delivered during Tutor Time by form tutors and in assemblies by SLT and appointed staff and guests at appropriate points throughout the academic year.
Additionally, all Year 11 pupils have two face-to-face careers interviews with a Level 6 qualified careers advisor to assist with post-16 transition and applications.
Equality and diversity
Careers education is provided to all pupils and provision is made to allow all pupils to access the curriculum. Pupils are encouraged to follow career paths that suit their interests, skills and strengths with the absence of stereotypes. All pupils are provided with the same opportunities and diversity is celebrated.

A number of events, integrated into the school careers programme, will offer providers an opportunity to come into school to speak to pupils and/or their parents/carers:
Premises and facilities
Hethersett Academy will make the main sports hall, classrooms or meeting rooms available for discussions between providers and pupils as appropriate for the activity. The academy will make ICT and other specialist equipment available to support provider presentations. These will all be discussed and agreed in advance with the school careers lead.
Our careers programme is monitored regularly through termly evaluations of students’ views and knowledge gained through the careers lessons. We are then able to identify gaps in the provision and rectify this in the next cycle of the programme. We also use the Help You Choose website to track and monitor Year 11 post-16 applications.
